Franco Carlini, "Parole di carta e di web. Ecologia della comunicazione" [Paper and Web Words. Communication Ecology], Turin, Einaudi, 2004.
What is the Internet? What opportunities does it offer for the future? This well written and easy to read manual offers a well-documented reflection on the broader meaning of the web. A pleasant though at the same time poignant read, the book is full of thought-provoking ideas - at times decisively controversial, though always well-argued and documented - on how and to what extent technology can influence (and hopefully improve) communication today.

Useful for: gaining a better understanding of the Internet today.

Gianni Lombardi, "Come si fa a comunicare con la posta elettronica" [How to Communicate by Email], Milano, Tecniche Nuove, 2006.
A sort of guide to etiquette for the third millennium, this handy and entertaining guide offers sound advice on how to make best use of e-mail, which even today can be a communication means full of hidden snares and dangers.

Useful for: improving your written communication.

Gianfranco Livraghi, "L'umanità dell'internet. Le vie della rete sono infinite" [The Humanity of the Internet. The ways of the Net are Infinite], Milano, Hops, 2001.
The text - showing courage on the part of the author - can be found also online. The book provides a level-headed, general reflection, on a "human-scale" in my opinion (and to use the words of the author) on the Internet, which should be considered precisely that which it is increasingly becoming - an aspect of our daily lives.

Useful for: understanding how the Internet works, without creating a monster or a myth of it.
